Origins of the Trucker Hat
Trucker hats originated in the 1960s and 70s as promotional giveaway items from agricultural, transportation, feed and farming supply companies. They were often given to truck drivers and other rural workers which is where they got the name “trucker hats”; however, they are also sometimes known as “gimme caps” or “feed caps” due to their promotional nature.
This is one of the first instances of a ‘walking billboard’ marketing technique, where all you have to do is give away a promotional item and your company will be continually promoted for no extra cost whenever the wearer chooses to wear your hat.
Trucker Hat Features
Trucker hats are characterised by a structured foam front (usually featuring the logo of the haulage company) and a breathable plastic mesh back, ideal for comfort during long hours on the road or for blue collar workers who spent long hours outdoors. The foam is stiff and stands straight up, making trucker hats taller than most baseball caps.
Trucker hats also tend to feature a snapback closure – to ensure one size fits most – and a stiff curved bill.

Despite originating as a practical workwear item, by the 2000s, trucker hats had evolved into a mainstream fashion trend. This crossover to the mainstream was driven by the broader trend of that era, where working class fashion was blended with urban street style.
Subcultures like hip hop, pop punk and skaters further popularised trucker hats, as did celebrity endorsements from stars like Ashton Kutcher and Pharrell Williams who embraced trucker caps as part of their branding.
