Trapper hats are designed for warmth and protection from the cold, hence why they feature distinctive ear flaps that help to shield the neck, cheeks and ears. These flaps can be secured on top of the head or some have a strap with a buckle or snap closure that allows the hat to be secured under the chin for an extra windproof fit!

They are usually lined with a soft, warm material like faux fur or shearling sheepskin for extra insulation. The exterior of the trapper hat is typically designed to be weather-resistant, using materials like wool, waxed cotton or leather to protect from wind and moisture.

Why Is It Called a Trapper Hat?

Trapper hats got their name as they were originally worn by fur trappers in the 17^th century to protect their heads and necks from the harsh North American winter climate where they hunted. While they originated with trappers, the hat’s practical design led to it being adopted by other groups, like military pilots in World War I who needed head and ear protection from the frosty winds they faced in the first open-cockpit biplanes. This is why trapper hats are also sometimes called bomber hats or aviator hats.

It was only during the mid-20^th century that trapper hats rose in popularity as a fashion item, and they have experienced many major resurgences in popularity since then.
