What Is a Snood?

Although snoods may seem like a modern fashion accessory, they have actually been around for hundreds of years and their style and uses have evolved over this time to form the versatile scarf we know today. Keep reading this blog for a rundown on the history of snoods, their design and uses.

The History of Snoods

Traditional snoods were a type of headgear worn by women as early as the 16th century. They were originally silk ribbons used to tie back hair and symbolise chastity in Scotland – in fact, the term 'snood' can be traced back to the Old English word 'snod' meaning 'a ribbon for hair'.

During the 1940s and 50s, knitted and crocheted snoods were popularised in Hollywood as a practical fashion accessory and rose to popularity in particular amongst factory workers thanks to their practical use of keeping hair out of machinery.

It was only in the early 2000s that designers redefined the term snood to refer to the new tubular “cowl” or “infinity scarf” version. Once celebrities began incorporating snood scarves into their outfits, it led to a significant surge in their popularity as a mainstream winter fashion item.

The Modern Snood Design

The hallmark of the modern snood is its tubular or loop design that can slip easily over the head without any loose ends that need tucking or rearranging. Many modern snood designs are also versatile and can be worn simply round the neck like a traditional scarf, pulled up over the lower face for extra protection or worn even higher on the head as a makeshift hood!
